QR Codes on Food Packaging: Give Customers a Reason to Scan

QR codes on food packaging work best when they solve a clear customer task. A small code with no explanation gives people little reason to use it. Start with the action you want to make easier.

Choose one useful destination

Send customers to an ordering page, current menu, catering inquiry, or product information that belongs with the purchase. Choose the destination that matches the package. A pizza box can support repeat ordering; a catering carrier may be better suited to an event inquiry.

Use a page you control and expect to maintain. Check that it opens quickly on a phone and makes the next step obvious without unnecessary searching.

Write the invitation beside the code

Use a short, accurate instruction such as “Scan to view our catering menu” or “Scan to order again.” Include a readable website address as another way to reach you.

  • Keep the code away from folds, seams, tabs, and heavily textured areas.
  • Leave clear space around it and maintain strong contrast.
  • Confirm the proposed size and placement with your packaging designer.
  • Avoid placing changing prices or short-lived offers directly on long-term packaging.

Test the printed proof

Scan a proof at the final print size with more than one phone. Test under normal indoor light and at the angle a customer would hold the box. Check both the scan and the destination’s ordering or inquiry path.

If you use a managed redirect or code service, confirm who owns it, whether it requires a subscription, and what happens if that service ends. A working code today is not enough if the boxes will remain in use for months.
